Attic of a typical Berlin block in Neukölln, once abandoned and in poor condition, transformed into an artist’s storage space. Working with a low budget and strict regulations, the project focuses on preserving and reusing existing elements rather than replacing them. Despite recommendations to demolish due to Lindane contamination in the timber structure, the intervention demonstrates that careful restoration can make reuse possible—reducing costs, waste and embodied energy. The guiding principle is clear: repair instead of demolish.
Natural insulation, new roof windows and precise detailing turn the attic into a warm, dry and well-ventilated storage environment suited for artworks. Original features such as brick gables, aged beams and the irregular geometry are deliberately left visible, maintaining the building’s character while enabling a subtle densification from within.
